Justice and Evil Overview

Your sin will find you out.
                                             Numbers 32:23

“It is mine to avenge; I will repay.”
                                             Deuteronomy 32:35

The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.
Man looks at the outward appearance,
but the Lord looks at the heart.
                                             1 Samuel 16:7

O righteous God,
who searches minds and hearts
                                             Psalm 7:9

O Lord, the God of truth                   Psalm 31:5

He knows the secrets of the heart
                                             Psalm 44:21

Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.
                                             Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

“I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind,
to reward a man according to his conduct,
according to what his deeds deserve.”
                                             Jeremiah 17:10

“I know it and am a witness to it,”
declares the Lord.
                                             Jeremiah 29:23

For the word of God is living and active.
Sharper than any double-edged sword,
it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow;
it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.
Everything is uncovered and laid bare
before the eyes of him
to whom we must give account.
                                               Hebrews 4:12-13

For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat…
So then, each of us will give account of himself to God.
                                             Romans 14:10,12

See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up
to cause trouble and defile many.
                                             Hebrews 12:15

Justice and Evil - New Testament

MATTHEW 5:38-39

“You have heard that it was said,
‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
But I tell you,
Do not resist an evil person.
If someone strikes you on the right cheek,
turn to him the other also.”

MATTHEW 6:18

“Your Father,
who sees what is done in secret,
will reward you.”

MATTHEW 7:15-16

“Watch out for false prophets.
They come to you in sheep’s clothing,
but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
By their fruit you will recognize them.”

MATTHEW 10:26

“There is nothing concealed that
will not be disclosed,
or hidden that will not be made known.”

MATTHEW 12:35-37

“The good man brings good things
out of the good stored up in him,
and the evil man brings evil things out
of the evil stored up in him.
But I tell you that men will have to
give account
on the day of judgment
for every careless word they have spoken.
For by your words you will be acquitted,
and by your words you will be condemned.”

MATTHEW 15:18-19

“The things that come out of the
mouth come from the heart,
and these make a man ‘unclean.’
For out of the heart come evil thoughts,
murder, adultery, sexual immorality,
theft, false testimony, slander.
These are what make a man ‘unclean’”

MATTHEW 16:27

“For the Son of man is going to come
in his Father’s glory with his angels,
and then he will reward each person
according to what he has done.”

MATTHEW 22:36-40

“Teacher, which is the greatest
commandment?”
Jesus replied,
“’Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and greatest
commandment.
And the second is like it:
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
All the Law and the Prophets hang on
these two commandments.”

MATTHEW 23:27-28

“Woe to you,
teachers of the law and Pharisees,
you hypocrites!
You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside
but on the inside are full of dead
men’s bones and everything unclean.
In the same way,
on the outside you appear to people as righteous
but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

MARK 7:20-21

“What comes out of a man is what
makes him ‘unclean.’
For from within, out of men’s hearts,
come evil thoughts,
   sexual immorality, theft,
      murder, adultery, greed, malice,
        deceit, lewdness, envy,
           slander, arrogance and folly.
All these evils come from inside
and make a man ‘unclean.’”

LUKE 6:43-45

“No good tree bears bad fruit,
nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.
People do not pick figs from thornbushes,
or grapes from briers.
The good man brings good things out
of the good stored up in his heart,
and the evil man brings evil things out
of the evil stored up in his heart.
For out of the overflow of his heart his
mouth speaks.”

JOHN 3:19-21

“This is the verdict:
Light has come into the world,
but men loved darkness instead of light
    because their deeds were evil.
Everyone who does evil hates the light,
and will not come into the light
for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
But whoever lives by the truth comes
into the light,
so that it may be seen plainly that
what he has done
has been done through God.”

JOHN 8:44

…not holding to the truth,
for there is no truth in him [Satan].
When he lies, he speaks his native language,
for he is a liar and the father of lies.

ACTS 1:24

Lord, you know everyone’s heart.

ACTS 5:3-4

“Ananias, how is it that Satan has so
filled your heart
that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…?
You have not lied to men but to God.”

ACTS 17:31

[God] has set a day
when he will judge the world with justice
by the man he has appointed.
He has given proof of this to all men
by raising him from the dead.

ROMANS 6:11-12

Count yourselves dead to sin but
alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body
so that you obey its evil desires.

ROMANS 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good
of those who love him,
who have been called according to his purpose.

ROMANS 2:5-8,16
                                                            (5-8)
Because of your stubbornness and
your unrepentant heart,
you are storing up wrath against yourself
for the day of God’s wrath,
when his righteous judgment will be revealed.
God “will give back to each person
according to what he has done”
                       (Psalm 62:12, Proverbs 24:12)
To those who by persistence in doing good
seek glory, honor and immortality,
he will give eternal life.
But for those who are self-seeking
and who reject the truth and follow evil,
there will be wrath and anger.
                                                            (16)
This will take place on the day
when God will judge men’s secrets
through Jesus Christ

ROMANS 12:9,17-19,21
                                                            (9)
Love must be sincere.
Hate what is evil;
cling to what is good.
                                                            (17-19)
Do not repay anyone evil for evil.
Be careful to do what is right in the               eyes of everybody.
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you,
live at peace with everyone.
Do not take revenge, my friends,
but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written:
“It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”
says the Lord.
                                                            (21)
Do not be overcome by evil,
but overcome evil by good.

ROMANS 13:9-10

The commandments…
are summed up in this one rule:
“Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love does no harm to its neighbor.

ROMANS 14:10-12

For we will all stand before God’s
judgment seat.
It is written:

“’As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee shall bow before me;
every tongue will confess to God.’”

So then, each of us
will give account of himself to God.

1 CORINTHIANS 3:10-15

By the grace God has given me,
I laid a foundation as an expert builder,
and someone else is building on it.
But each one should be careful how he builds.
For no one can lay any foundation
other than the one already laid,
which is Jesus Christ.
If any man builds on this foundation
using gold, silver, costly stones,
wood, hay or straw,
his work will be shown for what it is,
because the Day will bring it to light.
It will be revealed with fire,
and the fire will test the quality of
each man’s work.
If what he has built survives,
he will receive his reward.
If it is burned up, he will suffer loss;
he himself will be saved,
but only as one escaping through flames.

1 CORINTHIANS 4:4-5

It is the Lord who judges me.
Therefore judge nothing before the
appointed time;
wait till the Lord comes.
He will bring to light what is hidden
in darkness
and will expose the motives of
men’s hearts.
At that time each will receive his
praise from God.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:10

For we must all appear
before the judgment seat of Christ,
that each one may receive what is due him
for the things done while in the body,
whether good or bad.

2 CORINTHIANS 11:13-15

For such men are false apostles,
deceitful workmen,
masquerading as apostles of Christ.
And no wonder, for
Satan himself masqueraded as an
angel of light.
It is not surprising, then,
if his servants masquerade as
servants of righteousness.
Their end will be what their actions deserve.

GALATIANS 2:6

God does not judge by external appearance

GALATIANS 6:7-10

Do not be deceived;
God cannot be mocked.
A man reaps what he sows.
The one who sows to please his sinful nature,
from that nature will reap destruction;
the one who sows to please the Spirit,
from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a
harvest if we do not give up.
Therefore, as we have opportunity,
let us do good to all people,
especially to those who belong
to the family of believers.

EPHESIANS 4:25,31-32
                                                            (25)
Each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor
                                                            (31-32)
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and
anger, brawling and slander,
along with every form of malice.
Be kind and compassionate to one another,
forgiving each other, just as in Christ
God forgave you.

EPHESIANS 6:8

The Lord will reward everyone
for whatever good he does.

COLOSSIANS 3:5-10,17,23-25
                                                            (5-10)
Put to death, therefore, whatever
belongs to your earthly nature:
sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil
desires and greed, which is idolatry.
Because of these things, the wrath of
God is coming.
You used to walk in these ways, in
the life you once lived.
But now you must rid yourselves of all
such things as these:
anger, rage, malice, slander, and
filthy language from your lips.
Do not lie to each other,
since you have taken off your old self
with its practices
and have put on the new self,
which is being renewed in knowledge
in the image of its Creator.
                                                            (17)
And whatever you do,
whether in word or deed,
do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus
                                                            (23-25)
Whatever you do,
work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for men,
since you know that you will receive
an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.
It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Anyone who does wrong
will be repaid for his wrong, and there
is no favoritism.

1 THESSALONIANS 2:4-5

We are not trying to please men but God,
who tests our hearts…
God is our witness.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:15,21-22
                                                            (15)
Make sure that nobody pays back
wrong for wrong,
but always try to be kind to each
other and to everyone else.
                                                            (21-22)
Test everything.
Hold on to the good.
Avoid every kind of evil.

2 THESSALONIANS 1:6-7

God is just:
He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you
and give relief to you who are troubled…
This will happen when the Lord Jesus
is revealed from heaven in blazing fire
with his powerful angels.

2 THESSALONIANS 3:2-3

Pray that we may be delivered from
wicked and evil men,
for not everyone has faith.
But the Lord is faithful,
and he will strengthen and protect
you from the evil one.

2 TIMOTHY 2:19

God’s solid foundation stands firm,
sealed with this inscription:
“The Lord knows those who are his,” and,
“Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord
must turn away from wickedness.”

2 TIMOTHY 4:18

The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack
and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.
To him be glory for ever and ever.
Amen.

TITUS 1:15-16

To the pure, all things are pure,
but to those who are corrupted and
do not believe,
nothing is pure.
In fact, both their minds and
consciences are corrupted.
They claim to know God, but by their
actions they deny him.
They are detestable, disobedient
and unfit for doing anything good.

HEBREWS 4:12-13

For the word of God is living and active.
Sharper than any double-edged sword,
it penetrates even to dividing
soul and spirit, joints and marrow;
it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Nothing in all creation
is hidden from God’s sight.
Everything is uncovered and laid bare
before the eyes of him
to whom we must give account.

HEBREWS 9:27

…as man is destined to die once
and after that to face judgment

HEBREWS 10:30

For we know him who said,
“It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”
and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”

HEBREWS 12:13

See to it that no one misses the grace of God
and that no bitter root grows up
to cause trouble and defile many.

JAMES 1:21-22

Get rid of all moral filth and the evil
that is so prevalent
and humbly accept the word planted in you,
which can save you.
Do not merely listen to the word, and
so deceive yourself.
Do what it says.

JAMES 3:6,8
                                                            (6)
The tongue is also a fire,
a world of evil among the parts of the body.
It corrupts the whole person,
sets the whole course of his life on fire,
and it itself set on fire by hell.
                                                            (8)
No man can tame the tongue.
It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

1 PETER 2:1,23
                                                            (1)
Rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit,
hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.
                                                            (23)
He [Jesus] entrusted himself
to him who judges justly.

1 PETER 3:10-12

“Whoever would love life
    and see good days
must keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from deceitful speech.
He must turn from evil and do good;
he must seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against
those who do evil.”
                                    (Psalm 34:12-16)

1 PETER 4:5

They will have to give account
to him who is ready to judge
the living and the dead.

1 JOHN 1:6

If we claim to have fellowship with
him yet walk in the darkness,
we lie and do not live by the truth.

1 JOHN 2:21

no lie comes from the truth

God is greater than our hearts,
and he knows everything.

1 JOHN 5:3,17
                                                            (3)

to obey his commands.
                                             (17)
All wrongdoing is sin

I know your deeds

to your deeds.

Yes, Lord God Almighty,
true and just are your judgments.

REVELATION 19:1-2,11-13
                                                            (1-2)
Hallelujah!
Salvation and glory and power belong
to our God,
for true and just are his judgments.
                                                            (11-13)
I saw heaven standing open
and there before me was a white horse,
whose rider is called Faithful and True.
With justice he judges and makes war.
His eyes are like blazing fire,
and on his head are many crowns.
He has a name written on himself that
no one knows but he himself.
He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,
and his name is the Word of God.

REVELATION 22:12

Behold, I am coming soon!
My reward is with me,
and I will give to everyone
according to what he has done.
I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the First and the Last,
the Beginning and the End.

REVELATION 22:20-21

He who testifies to these things says,
“Yes, I am coming soon.”

Amen.  Come,  Lord Jesus.

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people.

Amen.

    where evildoers can hide.

PSALM 7:9

O righteous God,
    who searches minds and hearts

PSALM 10:11-14

He says to himself, “God has forgotten;
he covers his face and never sees.”

Arise, Lord!  Lift up your hand, O God.
    Do not forget the helpless.
Why does the wicked man revile God?
Why does he say to himself,
“He won’t call me to account”?
But you, O God, do see trouble and grief;
you consider it to take it in hand.
The victim commits himself to you;
you are the helper of the fatherless.

PSALM 11:4-5,7

He observes the sons of men;
    his eyes examine them.

He is the God who avenges me

PSALM 31:5

O Lord, the God of truth

PSALM 33:13-15

From heaven the Lord looks down
    and sees all mankind;
from his dwelling place he watches
all who live on earth –
he who forms the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.

PSALM 34:13-16

…keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking lies.
Turn from evil and do good;
     seek peace and pursue it.

The eyes of the Lord are on the
righteous
     and his ears are attentive to their cry;
the face of the Lord is against those who do evil
                                                (1 Peter 3:10-12)

PSALM 36:1-4

An oracle is within my heart
    concerning the wicked:
There is no fear of God
    before his eyes.
For in his own eyes he flatters himself
too much to detect or hate his sin.
The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful;
he has ceased to be wise and to do good.
Even on his bed he plots evil;
he commits himself to a sinful course
and does not reject what is wrong.

PSALM 37:1-2,7-8
                                                            (1-2)
Do not fret because of evil men
or be envious of those who do wrong
                                                            (7-8)
Be still before the Lord and wait
patiently for him

Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight.

PSALM 52:2-3

Your tongue plots destruction;
it is like a sharpened razor,
    you who practice deceit.
You love evil rather than good,
falsehood rather than speaking the truth.

PSALM 55:12-14,19-22
                                                            (12-14)
If an enemy were insulting me,
    I could endure it;
if a foe were raising himself against me,
    I could hide from him.
But it is you, a man like myself,
    my companion, my close friend,
with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship
as we walked with the throng at the
house of God.
                                                            (19-22)
God, who is enthroned forever,
will hear them and afflict them –
men who never change their ways
and have no fear of God.

My companion attacks his friends;
    he violates his covenant.
His speech is smooth as butter,
    yet war is in his heart;
his words are more soothing than oil,
    yet they are drawn swords.

PSALM 62:11-12

One thing God has spoken,
    two things have I heard:
that you, O God, are strong,
and that you, O Lord, are loving.
Surely you will reward each person
according to what he has done.

of the wicked,
from the grasp of evil and cruel men.

PSALM 75:7

It is God who judges

PSALM 94:7-11,23
                                                            (7-11)
They say “The Lord does not see;
the God of Jacob pays no heed.”

Take heed, you senseless ones
among the people;
you fools, when will you become wise?
Does he who implanted the ear not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see?
Does he who disciplines nations not punish?
Does he who teaches man lack knowledge?
The Lord knows the thoughts of man;
he knows that they are futile.
                                                            (23)
He will repay them for their sins

PSALM 97:10

Let those who love the Lord hate evil

PSALM 109:2-5,21-22
                                                            (2-5)
for wicked and deceitful men
   have opened their mouths against me;
they have spoken against me with
lying tongues.
With words of hatred they surround me;
    they attack me without cause.
In return for my friendship they accuse me,
but I am a man of prayer.
They repay me evil for good,
and hate me for my friendship.
                                                            (21-22)
But you, O Sovereign Lord,
 deal well with me for your name’s sake;
out of the goodness of your love,
               deliver me.
For I am poor and needy,
and my heart is wounded within me.

PSALM 120:1-2

I call on the Lord in my distress,
    and he answers me.
Save me, O Lord, from lying lips
    and from deceitful tongues.

PSALM 129:4

The Lord is righteous;
he has cut me free from the cords
of the wicked.

PSALM 141:3-4

Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.
Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil,
to take part in wicked deeds
with men who are evildoers;
let me not eat of their delicacies.

PROVERBS 1:7

The fear of the Lord is the beginning
of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

PROVERBS 2:12-15

Wisdom will save you from the ways
of wicked men,
from men whose words are perverse,
who leave the straight paths
    to walk in dark ways,
who delight in doing wrong
and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,
whose paths are crooked
and who are devious in their ways.

PROVERBS 3:7

fear the Lord and shun evil.

PROVERBS 5:21-22

A man’s ways are in full view of the
Lord,
and he examines all his paths.
The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him;
the cords of his sin hold him fast.

PROVERBS 6:16-19

There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:

    haughty eyes,
    a lying tongue,
    hands that shed innocent blood,
    a heart that devises wicked
schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies,
and a man who stirs up dissension
among brothers.

PROVERBS 8:13

To fear the Lord is to hate evil;
    I hate pride and arrogance,
   evil behavior and perverse speech.

PROVERBS 10:9,29
                                                            (9)
The man of integrity walks securely,
but he who takes crooked paths
will be found out.
                                                            (29)
The way of the Lord is a refuge for
the righteous,
but it is the ruin of those who do
evil.

PROVERBS 11:20-21

The Lord detests men of perverse
heart…
Be sure of this:  The wicked will not
go unpunished,
but those who are righteous will go
free.

PROVERBS 12:22

The Lord detests lying lips,
but he delights in men who are truthful.

how much more the hearts of men!

The Lord detests the thoughts of the wicked

All a man’s ways seem innocent to him,
but motives are weighed by the Lord.

but the Lord weighs the heart.

PROVERBS 24:12, 28
                                                            (12)
If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,”
does not he who weighs the
heart perceive it?
Does not he who guards your life know it?
Will he not repay each person
according to what he has done?
                                                            (28)
Do not testify against your neighbor
without cause,
or use your lips to deceive.

PROVERBS 26:23-26

Like a coating of glaze over earthenware
are fervent lips with an evil heart.

A malicious man disguises himself
with his lips,
but in his heart he harbors deceit.
Though his speech is charming, do
not believe him,
for seven abominations fill his heart.
His malice may be concealed by deception,
but his wickedness will be exposed
in the assembly.

PROVERBS 28:13-14

He who conceals his sin does not prosper,
    but whoever confesses and
renounces them finds mercy.
Blessed is the man who always fears the Lord,
but he who hardens his heart falls
into trouble.

Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:

    including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.

    and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
    and sweet for bitter.

ISAIAH 28:15-17

“When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by,
    it cannot touch us,
for we have made a lie our refuge,
    and falsehood our hiding place.”

So this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,     a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who trusts will never be dismayed.
I will make justice the measuring line
    and righteousness the plumb line;
hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie,
and water will overflow your hiding place.”

ISAIAH 29:15-16

Woe to those who go to great depths
to hide their plans from the Lord,
who do their work in darkness and think,
“Who sees us?  Who will know?”
You turn things upside down,
as if the potter were thought to be
like the clay!
Shall what is formed say to him who
formed it,
    “He did not make me”?
Can the pot say of the potter,
    “He knows nothing”?

Your lips have spoken lies,
and your tongue mutters wicked things.
                                                            (4)
They rely on empty arguments and
speak lies;
    they conceive trouble and give
birth to evil.
                                                            (6)
Their deeds are evil deeds,
and acts of violence are in their hands.
                                                            (7)
Their thoughts are evil thoughts
                                                            (8)

“Should you not tremble in my presence?”

JEREMIAH 9:3

                              declares the Lord.

O Lord Almighty, you who judge
righteously
and test the heart and mind

you see me and test my
thoughts about you.

“I the Lord search the heart
    and examine the mind,
to reward a man according to his conduct,
    according to what his deeds
deserve.”

JEREMIAH 20:12

O Lord Almighty, you who examine
the righteous
and probe the heart and mind

JEREMIAH 23:23-24

“Am I only a God nearby,”
                              declares the Lord,
“and not a God far away?

so that I cannot see him?”
                              declares the Lord,

I will shepherd the flock with justice.

HOSEA 7:1-2

They practice deceit…
but they do not realize
that I remember all their evil deeds.
Their sins engulf them;
    they are always before me.

HOSEA 10:12-13

Sow for yourselves righteousness,
reap the fruit of unfailing love,
and break up your unplowed ground;
for it is time to seek the Lord,
until he comes
    and showers righteousness on you.
but you have planted wickedness,
    you have reaped evil,
you have eaten the fruit of deception.

MICAH 2:1

Woe to those who plan iniquity,
to those who plot evil on their beds!

MICAH 6:8

He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

ZECHARIAH 8:16-17

“These are the things you are to do:

talked with each other,
and the Lord listened and heard.

in his presence
concerning those who feared the Lord
and honored his name
